Quality Insights of Pennsylvania, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Pennsylvania, is seeking a Communications Specialist. This person will write, edit and produce a wide range of printed and Web-based materials such as educational videos, public service announcements and provider and consumer interventions.  This position will be responsible for planning educational events as needed and will provide a wide range of support for communications requests from internal and external customers.  The successful candidate will represent the organization to partners and the general public by making presentations, attending community meetings, participating in coalitions and serving on workgroups or committees.  This person will assist with media-based projects and in developing and implementing social marketing projects.  

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or related field required. Master's preferred. Two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in a communications dissemination field required. Graphic design skills a plus.

Communications/Public Relations Internship
For 2010 Fall Semester and 2011 Spring Semester

Background/Qualifications:

  • Full-time student at a local college or university, majoring in Communications, preferably with a concentration in Public Relations, Marketing or Graphic Design.
  • Candidate should be a third or fourth year student. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply.
  • The ideal candidate would be willing to continue the internship into the summer for continuity.
  • Would be required to work at least 10-12 hours/week for college credits and/or negotiable stipend in the PAESSP office. Flexible hours.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong computer skills -- desktop publishing.
  • Competence in graphic design using Adobe PageMaker, Photoshop, In-Design and Illustrator. Must be familiar with the basics of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel and Outlook Express.
  • Working knowledge of a printer/copier, scanner, digital camera and other office equipment.
  • A background in web site design is a plus, but not necessary.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Working directly with the Director of Communications. (Candidate will also have interaction with various other office staff on a daily basis.)
  • Writing occasional press releases.
  • Writing and/or editing occasional articles for the web site, newsletter, bi-weekly e-newsletter and award-winning magazine.
  • Occasional graphic design and layout for the magazine and/or newsletter. Working with photos and graphics in Photoshop for the publications.
  • Assisting with the publicity and marketing materials for the 2009 state conference.
  • Participate in staff meetings, several off site meetings and possibly an occasional board of directors’ meeting.
  • Sending broadcast emails to membership for promotional purposes.
  • Typing and preparing information for other PAESSP publications.
  • Writing a weekly or bi-weekly legislative update and other articles for the web site and/or for the You Need to Know e-newsletter in conjunction with the Director of Communications and the Assistant Executive Director.
  • Conducting research for articles on the Internet from time to time.
  • Writing and inputting information into the template for the bi-weekly e-newsletter, You Need to Know.
  • Organizing and gathering articles for the Pennsylvania Administrator magazine. Also, helping with the design and editing of the magazine.
  • Minor web maintenance is possible.
  • Assisting with any other projects that are assigned by the Director of Communications.

The deadline for submitting a resume is August 6, 2010, for the fall semester and December 3, 2010 for the spring 2011 semester.

The candidate would be requested to start in late August for the fall 2010
and January for the spring 2011.

Also, we are looking for a junior or senior (May 2011 graduation) who could stay for both the fall an spring semesters to develop continuity.
